They are going to cut down our Poplars!

I see from the aldermaston newsletter that agreement has been made with WBC to fell the poplars along the A340. There are also plans to fell some trees along the Canal to the West of the lock. This is the first I have heard of this. Does anyone have any insights or comments on this?

From further info (aldermaston trees info sheet) it appears all the poplars along the canal are also to be killed off, so the character of the entire area will change for decades.

As of today, 16/Mar, almost all of the poplars on the northern side of the canal are gone. 5 or 6 of them went today alone.

I’ve taken a few pictures of the destruction, I plan a follow up entry on my blog over the next few days.

I think that sounds terrible! The poplars are absolutely beautiful and form a wonderful avenue down the A340. Does anyone know why they need to be felled or how it could be stopped?

More poplars trees have been cut down this weekend on the right of The Fallows development as you enter Aldermaston Wharf. Its shocking how many trees have been cut down in the area in recent times…
