Padworth Environmental Group (PEG) – Dec/Jan update

Busy! Busy! Busy! It’s a hectic time of year but get away from the hubbub of shopping and stressful life and do something in the Community; we’re just a bunch of friendly volunteers so if you’re interested in helping – let us know and come along!

The Big Tidy Up! – Saturday 6 December

Come along to our Big Tidy Up between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 6 December and help clean up our Community. Litter-picking is typically done during the winter months when plant growth and animal/bird activity are at a minimum. We’ll meet at the pond on Mallards Way then spread out and cover the housing estates, the canal and up to Padworth Village Hall (we don’t go near the A4!). Bring the children and help them to understand the issues which rubbish has on our environment from a young age. All welcome (come and go whenever is convenient). Litter-pickers provided but please wear strong shoes, bring thick gloves and wear warm/waterproof clothing depending on the weather.

New Year’s Walk – Sunday 4 January

We live in a beautiful part of the country; come and enjoy it on Sunday 4 January. We’ll meet at 10.30am outside the Canal Shop. Route yet to be decided, but it will be low impact for around 2 hours.

The Fallows Nature Reserve – Saturday 17 January

Discussions are still ongoing with West Berks around the maintenance of the current and new wild seed beds, but we still hope to plant some yellow rattle this side of Christmas. The weather has been a bit wet to get out and do any tasks but we’ll plan to have a task on Saturday 17 January.

Padworth Common – BBOWT tasks

Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust have taken over the management of Padworth Common. Our Common is a special heathland habitat and it’s important that the heather and birch are managed to keep the diversity of wildlife for this environment. There will be a number of tasks over the winter but dates aren’t circulated yet. Watch Facebook, Twitter or email for further details.

Other things to do……..

Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! It’s almost Christmas! Don’t forget to recycle!!

There’s no excuse any more. We have glass, green waste, paper and tins/plastic recycled on our doorsteps. Our supermarkets also have a wide range of containers to recycle goods including: Christmas cards, aluminium foil, batteries and clothes. Make sure you recycle as much as you can so that it doesn’t end up in landfill. There’s a useful A-Z where you can search and find local recycling collection points:
