Thames Valley Police would like to remind residents in West Berkshire to be wary of cold callers selling on the doorstep, especially traders in the home improvement sector offering services such as roof or guttering repairs.

If you think that a bogus caller has called on you report it immediately to the police via the 101 number. You can also report it to Trading Standards on 01635 519930 or e-mail tsadvice@westberks.gov.uk

If they are suspicious that a bogus caller may be intent on burglary or they become threatening dial 999.

Please can we ask that you keep an eye out for any vulnerable or elderly persons in your road?

In order to keep their property safe we would recommend that they:-

  • Keep the front and back doors locked, even when at home
  • Stop before they answer the door and check to see who is calling, either through the window or spyglass
  • If they decide to open the door, check the person’s identity card carefully, even if they have a pre arranged appointment. Close the door whilst this is being done. If they are still unsure, look up a number in the phone book and ring to verify their identity. Never ring the number on the identity card.
  • If they think that the work being offered needs doing get at least two quotes from local reputable builders.
